Highlights' Ideas for Creative Winter Fun—Draw a Picture! Write a Poem! Cook Yummy Treats!

Highlights, Highlights High Five®, and HighlightsKids.com® provide oodles of creative ideas and inspiration—year round. Here are some activities to engage your children this winter.
Encourage your kids to tap into their winter imaginations. Do they enjoy cozy days indoors, playing in the snow, or the excitement of the holidays? Here are some suggestions to help you and your kids get started.
- Create original pictures and stories using a sheet of newsprint or wrapping paper as a background.
- Write a poem about the winter. What's it like to have dinner when it's dark outside? How do icicles look on baretree branches?
- Create the look of snow by gluing cotton balls to paper or using an old toothbrush to gently splatter white paint on paper.
- Make symmetrical paper snowflakes by folding a sheet of paper in eighths and cutting out pieces from the corners. Unfold and display.
- Collect pinecones and twigs to glue or tie into creative sculptures.
