Is a Pet Right for Our Family?

It is estimated that 39% of American households own at least one dog, and 34% at least one cat.

If your child wants a pet, you may want to consider the ASPCA's recommendations to determine if your child is ready. It's not until age 10 that most children are able to care for cats, dogs, and other pets that require regular feeding, exercise, grooming, and attention. Even then, your help will be required to ensure proper care for the pets in your family. The ASPCA warns that acquiring pets just to "give your child a sense of responsibility" is not a valid reason to adopt an animal.
