Many of you wrote in to tell us about how life changes at this time of year. The majority of parents who responded said that they have less time together as a family and feel more stressed once school starts. They also indicated that their kids experience greater stress during the school year than over the summer. However, many parents expressed relief that the summer was over and that there was greater structure to both their children's lives and their own. Many were also excited to see their kids enjoying school, reconnecting with friends, and learning.
What you said:
Happy to be back
- It feels like there is some routine that has returned to our family. The summer was chaotic at times. The kids generally seem happy to be back in school as well.
- "Back to school" is exciting for my 2nd grader--new school supplies, more learning (yes, he'd rather study than go outside and play!). My 4-year-old can't wait to get "on schedule" like his big brother. I love getting their supplies, planning lunches, and getting back into the routine of being the Room Mom.
Unhappy to be back
- I feel sad that the lazy days of summer are over. Another school year begins, and my children take another step into the real world. It's hard to let go of those innocent faces that I won't be able to protect forever. Back to the treadmill of responsibility.
- My life becomes much more difficult when school starts, so it feels somewhat overwhelming at first. By the time I get used to it I'm looking forward to the day it ends. I am a single parent and I work a (very) full time job that does not allow flex time, starts very early in the morning, and is not understanding when it comes to a sick or needy child.
Mixed Feelings
- Exciting and Nervewracking! There is a fear of the unknown. Will we like our teachers? Am I ready for the next grade?
- What a busy time! I have 1 child in college, 1 in high school, 1 in middle school, and 1 in grade school. After all the children go back to school I feel relieved, but yet empty.
- Bittersweet. I love having my kids home with me. But, at the same time, they are so excited to get back to school with their friends that I can't help but get excited, too.
